5/09/2008 Full Pool Lake Level - 635.00 Current Lake Level - 634.74 Surface Temperature - Lower 70's
Water Clarity - Clear on the main lake. Clear up the creeks. Lightly stained up the Chattahoochee River.
Generation Schedule for Today - 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Time (subject to change without any notice).
LARGEMOUTH BASS / SPOTTED BASS - Good - Largemouth Bass fishing is picking back up in shallow.
The big females are starting to bite again and lizards, trick worms, super flukes and spinner baits are all
working on these shallow fish. Fishing for the bigger female Largemouth should continue to improve as
they recover from the spawn. Top water fishing is also getting good in the morning. Throw buzz baits in
the feeder creek pockets around blow downs, brush piles, weeds and grass. Back when the water levels
were down, grass and weeds grew in the pockets and coves all over West Point Lake. Now that the lake
is close to full, the grass and weeds are flooded. If the water level remains high, Bass fishing should be
good around the flooded grass and weeds. The fishing for Spotted Bass is excellent right now. Spotted
Bass are being caught all over the lake. They will hit a variety of baits but the best way to catch them is
probably a lightweight Carolina rigged finesse worm. Chartreuse pepper and watermelon seed with the
tail dipped in chartreuse garlic dye are really good colors. Fish the main lake points and shoal markers.
May is a great time to catch a big Bass. Please practice catch and release on Largemouth Bass. We do.
STRIPED BASS / HYBRID BASS - Very Good - Striped, Hybrid and White Bass are finished with their run
up the river. Most of the fish have gone back down into the lake. The best way to catch Striped, Hybrid
and White Bass in May is to down line live Shad on the main lake humps, flats and roadbeds. Right now
the fish are in the northern part of the lake from the mouth of Wolf Creek to the railroad trestle. Fishing
on the main lake humps should get good in about a week or so. Good main lake humps and flats to fish
are the railroad trestle hump, the flat at Pyne Road Park, the flat at the mouth Wehadkee Creek, the flat
at Amity Park, the flat at Indian Creek and the humps at the mouth of Maple Creek. The best time to fish
has been from daylight until about 11 a.m. The water color has been clear on the main lake and the fish
have been very spooky. Sometimes idling over them with your big motor running and electronics on will
scare the whole school off. Trolling with your big motor back and forth through them will scare them off
for sure. If you troll, please be courteous to people fishing live bait and don't troll too close to them. I'm
sure they will appreciate it. Main lake fishing for Hybrids and Stripers with live Shad should be excellent
in May. The D.N.R. has been stocking Striped Bass in West Point Lake. The first Striped Bass that were
stocked are up to about 10 pounds and growing fast. Please release these small Striped Bass and West
Point Lake will be one of the best lakes around for catching a big trophy Striper in the very near future!
CRAPPIE - Very Good - Night fishing for Crappie is getting good under the bridges. A few Crappie are in
blow downs and shallow brush piles and can be caught on minnows during the day but the best fishing
is now going to be at night. You can catch Crappie under just about any bridge on West Point Lake but
the best bridges are 109, the railroad trestle and the first bridge on Yellow Jacket Creek. If you want to
avoid the crowds some other good bridges to fish are in Wehadkee Creek and the bridge in the back of
Maple Creek. The most important thing about night fishing is good lights. Hydro Glow lights are a great
investment if you like to Crappie fish at night. They are expensive but you will pull fish away from other
lights close by and you will probably catch the most fish. Fish with minnows around 10 to 14 feet deep.
CATFISH - Excellent - Channel and Blue Catfish are biting good at night all over the main lake. Flathead
Catfish up to 35 pounds have been caught upriver. We have been catching lot's of nice Flatheads in the
10 to 20 pound range and several going to 28 pounds. Large Gizzard Shad, Bream, Crappie and smaller
Catfish are the best baits for catching a big Flathead (Bream and Crappie must be caught with rods and
reels to be legal baits). Good places to catch Flatheads are the deep holes from the 219 bridge up to the
shoals above Franklin (jet boats are required to get above the shoals). Heavy tackle is mandatory if you
expect to put a big Flathead Catfish in the boat. If you are not familiar with running the river, you should
go with someone who is. There are a lot of big rocks, stumps and sandbars that can damage your boat!
